Academic Writing Help

Raul Pacheco-Vega’s Academic Writing Blog is the first place to go if you are looking to improve your academic writing. I cannot recommend this enough!

The Classic Books

The Elements of Style by William Strunk Jr. and James McGill On Writing Well by William Zinsser

The Newer Books

Stylish Academic Writing by Helen Sword: Great advice on developing an academic writing style.

Houston, We Have a Narrative by Randy Olson: I am a huge fan of this book and believe it has made a huge difference in my academic and grant writing. I Stan for the ABT!

The Scientist’s Guide to Writing by Stephen Heard: I go to this book more than any other. It really is an underrated academic writing book. Chapter 6 on building writing momentum is worth the price of the book.

Data Science

Modern Data Science with R by Benjamin Baumer, Daniel Kaplan, and Nicholas Horton: One of my favorite approaches to statistics and data science.

R for Data Science by Hadley Wickham and Garrett Grolemund: A great introduction and reference to the tidyverse.

Grant McDermott’s lectures from his courses Data Science for Economists, and Big Data in Economics: Grant McDermott’s lecture slides are an amazing and underappreciated resource. I highly recommend going over them regardless of your data expertise.

Data visualization: A Practical Introduction by Kieran Healy: A great (and free) book on data visualization in R. Plus, Kieran Healy is the author of the unequivocally best titled academic paper ever.
